RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- Newly appointed Atletico Mineiro boss Jorge Sampaoli has vowed to bring a swift change of mentality as he seeks to revive the Brazilian side's season.
The 65-year-old was officially presented as Atletico's manager on Saturday, four days after the club announced his appointment.
"It's important to quickly implement a change in attitude and ambition," said Sampaoli, who had been out of work since leaving Stade Rennais in January.
"I've noticed the players have a sense of expectation. We will try to change the negative dynamics and give the fans reason to hope."
It will be Sampaoli's second spell at Atletico, having guided the Belo Horizonte club to third in Brazil's top flight in 2020 before leaving after less than a year.
His return follows the sacking of Cuca after a poor run that left Atletico 14th in the Serie A, two points above the relegation zone.
Sampaoli, who agreed to a deal running until December 2027, said he would demand commitment and focus from his squad, promising to cut out distractions.
"I'm very demanding of myself and my players," he said. "Some are relaxed, they don't like the demands, the same with some employees. People need to be fully engaged in this. Those who aren't will have differences with me."
Sampaoli's first game in charge will be the second leg of the Copa do Brasil quarterfinal against local rival Cruzeiro at the Mineirao stadium. Cruzeiro prevailed 2-0 in the first leg at the Arena MRV. ■
