NAIROBI, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- The Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) on Friday called on Kenya to build on the silver medal it won in beach volleyball during the African Games to prepare for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Moses Mbuthia, who managed the team at the continental games held in Rabat, Morocco, said the team has the potential to perform better with good preparations for upcoming championships, including the Olympic Games.

"More investment should be made in training and construction of accessible training courts within Nairobi which is the bedrock of majority of players," Mbuthia, who is also the assistant treasurer of KVF told Xinhua.

"This calls for sourcing of sponsorship to enable the federation to achieve the intended goals," Mbuthia remarked.

During the Rabat games, Kenya was one of 16 teams that took part in the event where the east African nation was drawn in Pool B along with Nigeria, Benin and Gambia.

Mbuthia said the team was selected based on merit as per the category required for the competition.

"Consequently, the pair of Naomie Too and Gaudencia Makokha was selected for the championship following their outstanding performance at the inaugural African beach games that were held in Cape Verde in June where they bagged bronze medal," the official said.

Prior to the inaugural continental beach games, the federation ran a circuit where players accumulated points from participating in the competitions and were subsequently ranked in accordance with performance and points earned, making the pair the best players for the championship as merited by the ranking analysis, Mbuthia pointed out.
